St. Jerome at Prayer

When the worship of God Apollo started in this temple, the priestess was given the nomenclature of Pythia. According to Diodorous, only virgins were appointed as Pythias in this temple. The first Pythia was a girl Phemonoe. Historians believe that Phemonoe was appointed Pythia in 700 B.C. Many young girls were appointed as Pythia after the first one. It was only after a tragic incident that decision was taken to appoint only women over fifty years of age as Pythia.
