The real name of Cagliostro was Guiseppe Balsamo. He was born on June
8, 1743 at Pelermo near Sicily. He was born in a poor Jewish family. Being
unable to bring up his son, his father abandoned him on the roads to fend
for himself, Guiseppe was brought up by a priest in a church. The priest
educated him and at the same time taught him to prepare medicines from
herbs. Guiseppe was a person given to mischief. And as such he was asked
to leave the church. He took refuge with a maternal uncle. There he specialized
in drawing, but due to his nasty nature, he used this art also in nefarious
activities.
