As the executioner put the black cap on the head of the condemned prisoner, she screamed loudly, “You cannot kill me. I can never die. I have Joann’s permit to go to heaven.”

From the above incident in York in 1809, the authorities came to know that a self-proclaimed prophet Joanna Southcott was distributing permits to the people, entitling them to go to heaven. Actually, at that time Joanna was already a well known fortune-teller. The officers wondered as to who instead of pursuing her flourishing business of forecasting, she had launched upon this dubious work of sending people to heaven. Further investigations were ordered
