To start with, he wrote novels but did not get much success. Then he turned to play-writing and his first successful play ‘Widowers’ Houses’ came out in 1892. Attacking landlords, it showed his alliance with a new essentially political and polemical movement in the theatre, aiming to engage the intellect rather than the emotions of his audience.

Even before he won Nobel Prize in literature in 1925, Shaw had acquired great fame as a dramatist and a literary figure. Shaw died in 1950 at the age of 94.
