| Mohammed was born in Mecca. In his early life, he worked as
a shephered and a caravan conductor. He was married to his employer’s
widow named Begum Khadiza. Afterwards, he started meditation. He had his
first revelation in A.D. 610. Later, Mohammed declared himself the prophet
of God or Allah. When he declared himself the Prophet of God, the authorities
in Mecca became hostile to him so he fled to Medina in A.D.622. This is
known as the ‘Hejira’ and this year i.e. A.D. 622 marks the
beginning of the Mohammedan Era. Ultimately Mohammed became victorious over
his enemies and he returned to Mecca in 630 as an accepted Prophet. Prophet
laid down some basic duties for the faithful Mohammedan, such as, five times
prayers during the day, alms to the poor, fasting during the holy month
of Ramazan. When Mohammed died in 632, in 11th Hejira, thousands of Arbas
had become his followers. He proclaimed the Kaba-a mosque and laid down
the ceremonies the haj (Pilgrimage) to Mecca at least once in one’s
life time.
