The eminent scientist who ushered India in the atomic age was Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha. Dr. Bhabha was appointed the first Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, set up in 1948. Due to his efforts the nation’s first atomic research centre, now named Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, was established Trombay (now Mumbai.). Under his expert guidance the nation’s first atomic reactor Apsara was also commissioned in 1956. In 1945, he founded the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bombay (now Mumbai). From 1945 to 1961, he worked consistently for the development of the atomic energy programme of the country
