The occasion may be the celebration of Caracalla for doing away with his brother Geta during the tussle for political power. Roman times have been vividly depicted by the author.The king with the princess and her attendants in the special enclosure meant for the royalty at the coliseum are watching an event. A servant kneels and stoops with a scroll of message. Done as oil on panel in 1907 this 123x154 cm painting is in a private collection.
