Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema
Sir Lawrence was a painter of Victorian themes. His popularity as a classical
painter was such that hardly any home was there which did not have at
least one of his works on display in their living rooms. He studied the
history of Germany, France and Belgium which he made good use of in bringing
out his “Faust and Marguerite”.
His studies under Henryk Leys in Antwerp resulted in the work “The
Education of the Children of Clovis”. After leaving Leys’
studio he painted Egyptian themes when he was known as a ‘Continental’
painter.
His paintings in this category were “An Egyptian Widow”,
“A Roman Family” and “An Audience at Agrippas”.
His settling down in England and subsequent knighting by Queen Victoria
were marked by his works “An Apodyterium”, “Spring”,
“The Coliseum”, “The Baths of Caracalla”, “Silver
Favourites”, “The Finding of Moses” and “A Favourite
Custom”. Many of his pictures of this period were erotic in nature
coupled with luxurious and exquisite marble interiors with the blue sea
and sky as backdrop. Several characters depicted by nude women figures
are examples. The pomp and mirth of Roman times are reflected in these
art works.
