The Coliseum. - Famous Art work & Drawing by Sir Lawrence
Alma-Tadema
Roman history narrates several stories of the brave exploits of the gladiators
and slaves fighting wild animals and the royal families enjoying this
cruel sport. These events were held in the ‘coliseum’.
Ladies of the nobility did have special enclosures.
The palace is overlooking the famous coliseum and the ladies are staring
at something below. The vase like marble structures are awesome in the
scenario. The coliseum used to be a public theater where condemned men
fought with wild animals. Sir Lawrence has displayed special acumen in
portrayal of the royal ladies and the coliseum. This picture, oil on panel
done in 1896 is in a private collection in USA.
