This art work of Sir Lawrence is again reminiscent of the Roman times when palanquins were the mode of transport amongst the rich. The baby in a basket may connote a historical incident.Several palanquin bearers are carrying a queen or princess. Two lady servants are carrying a baby in a basket. Perhaps they found the basket containing the baby floating in the river shown in the background. This oil on canvas of 1904 is in a private collection in UK.
