In the Roman period probably, open love life amongst the nobles was the
trend. Their lady folk seem to have nothing else to do.
The two ladies in this painting by Sir Lawrence are probably in love
with the same man. While one seems to close her eyes and enjoying some
inward bliss the other seems to be pining for him to come. Themes involving
lovers have been done in plenty by Sir Lawrence as evidenced in the vast
collection in various museums.
This picture was done as Oil on Panel in 1893 and is to be seen at the
Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, Bristol, UK.
