There, he organized peasants into a guerilla force and started harassing the government forces. In 1937, Japan attacked China and now communists under the leadership of Mao, cooperated with the Kuomintang forces and fought heroically against the Japanese. Japan was defeated in the Second World War in 1945 and so the trouble from Japan was over. However, China was not engulfed into a Civil War between the Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-Shek and the Red Army led by Mao Tse-tung. In 1948, the decisive battle was fought in which the Kuomintang forces were defeated and Chian Kai-Shek was driven out of China. Mao proclaimed People’s Republic of China in 1949.
