Self-Portrait in a Grey Felt Hat

But he was not a man to be defeated. In 1497, he discovered the Cape route to India. The land he touched on Christmas Day, he named it Natal, now a province of South Africa. Ultimately crossing the Indian Ocean he managed to reach a place called Calicut in May 1498, which is situated a long the sea-coast of Arabian sea. He was happy that after facing hardships and losing many of his colleagues, he succeeded in finding out a new route to India. The Portuguese colony in India was set up only after Vasco da Gama’s visit to Calicut. Having undergone so much trouble, when he reached back Lisbon, he had lost more than half the strength of the navigators, but as he had carried his ships loaded with Indian spices, he was given a rousing welcome.
