During the Second World War, he was decorated for bravery when as a torpedo boat commander he saved the lives of his crew members. When war ended, Kennedy joined politics as a Democrat and was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1946 and was re-elected for two more terms. In 1952, he was elected to the American Senate. In the Presidential elections held in November 1960, Kennedy defeated the Republican candidate Richard Nixon by a small margin.
