The Swedish Academy awarded the biggest prize to Morrison, who in her novels characterized by visionary force and poetic import, gives life an essential aspect of reality. Morrison is the eighth woman Laureate in literature. The prize worth was equivalent to 8,25000 US Dollars.

On winning the honour, Morrison exclaimed:
“This is a palpable tremor of delight for me. It was wholly unexpected and satisfying.”
The Swedish Academy described her writings as “Amazingly high, which denote aspects of blacks’ lives and especially of black as the people they are.”
Today this black-American woman Novelist is the guiding spirit among her fellow writers.
