In 1914, a science college was established in Calcutta and Raman was appointed its Principal. In 1921, he was awarded the degree of ‘Doctor of Science’ by the Calcutta University and in 1924, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. In 1928, Raman was elected President of the Indian Science Congress and in 1929, the British government in India conferred on him the title of ‘Sir’. From 1933 to 1948, he was the Director of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. In 1943, the Raman Research Institute was set up by him. There he conducted research work for the rest of his life.
