| RONALD REAGAN AMERICA: ACTOR & POLITICIAN BORN: 1911 Ronald Reagan is the most conspicuous example of a film actor striding the world stage as a successful statesman. For two decades, he remained the central character in world’s diplomacy and grim political scenario and was elected 35th President of the United States for two consecutive terms from 1980 to 1988. Born of February 6, 1911 at Illinois (US), his childhood was neither happy nor something to talk about. He had to work as a labourer and do odd jobs from an early age, but he continued to study. He graduated from Eureka College and started taking part in stage plays and radio programmes. He got an opportunity to act in the film ‘Love is in the Air’ produced by the well-known film producers Warner Brothers. On January 27, 1940, he married actress Jane Wyman. The marriage lasted for eight years. He married Nancy Davis on March 4, 1952. Reagan was in the army netween 1942-45. After his stint in films he swerved
towards politics. He was elected as governor of California during 1967-74.
He was chosen as Republican nominee for presidential election in 1980
and defeated Jimmy Carter to become president of the Uniter States of
America. He was re-elected in 1984.As President, he was very popular in
the US, but equally umpopular in foreign countries. He made the US as
the prime mover amongst super power blocs under his ‘Starwars’
strategy. He, however suffered a sethback, because of his role in clandestine
sale of armls to Iran. The US relations with India were also unpleasant
during his tenure because of the vast military aid to our neighbour Pakistan.
Reagan would be looked upon as a conservative and an adamant politician
in world history. |
