| DR.RAJENDRA PRASAD INDIA: FIRST PRESIDENT OF INDEPENDENT INDIA BORN: 1884 DIED: 1963 Rajendra Prasad was born December 3, 1884 at Zeradei in the Saran district of the state of Bihar. Since childhood, he was a brilliant student. After graduation, he wanted, to compete for ICS but due to his ailing father, he left the idea and joined M.A. and B.L classes in Calcutta. In 1911, he started legal practice and soon became a successful lawyer. In 1917, Rajendra Prasad me Gandhiji at Champaran and assisted him. He learnt a great deal from champaram Satyagraha and his association with Gandhiji. Later the weapon of Satyagraha, which was evolved in Champaran , was perfected in Kaira. Success of Kaira Satyagraha convinced Rajendra Prasad of the efficacy of the technique of Satyagraha. He became a true disciple of Gandhiji. After the Rowlatt Bills, the massacre of Jallian Wala Bagh took place on April 13, 1919, killing hundred and woundis thousands of innocent and unarmed people. Rajendra Prasad joined hands with Gandhiji and fixed April 6, 1919 for beginning Satyagraha and for the observance of hartal to protest against the Black Act. Later, he took part in the Civil Disobedience Movement during the 1950s. Rajendra Prasad was arrested after the passing Quit India Resolution on August 9,1942. He remained in jail from 1942 to 1945. In 1946, he was elected the President of the Constitutent Assembly. On January 24, 1950, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was elected the interim President
of independent India. He remained the President of India from 1950 to
1962. As the President, his salary was Rs.10,000 p.m. but he drew Rs.2,500
only a month. He was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1962 |
